Many of the mountain resorts these days offer much more than skiing/snowboarding. And Kitzsteinhorn, Kaprun we’ve currently visited is definitely one of them. Everyday, every season they offer comprehensive services for demanding customers. Ready for glacier skiing? Or having a drink in an ice igloo? Maybe you prefer to relax in a wellness with a stunning view? Bathing in salty water under the stars? And what about exploring the beauty of the mountains from above in a balloon?
All of that and even more, there is lots to do here. I’ve already visited quite a few Austrian ski resorts but Kaprun really took my breath away with all the services and fun program for the visitors.
We stayed directly in Kaprun which is only few minutes drive from the glacier slopes. And the great thing is that you don’t have to drive yourself up there. The resort provides a ski bus which goes every 15 minutes and there are plenty of stops in the town. And the best thing – this service is totally free. The websites says that you have to hold a ski pass but no one would kick you out of the bus as long as you are dressed in your winter gear.
Kitzsteinhorn offers about 40 km of ski slopes, many freeride areas and 3 big snow parks. There are also plenty of possibilities to dine on this mountain, from small snacks in a self serve bar to an honest and rich Austrian cuisine. I would totally recommend to visit the Gipfel restaurant, where you can enjoy food and drinks with the most dramatic view, 3000 m above sea level. And once you please your taste buds, don’t forget to visit the panorama platforms to snap pictures of Austria’s highest mountains.
For those who don’t feel like going far from their accommodation, there are few smaller slopes on Maiskogel, which is in walking distance from most hotels and apartments. There is also a bobsled on this hill, running all year round. This option is great for families and beginners.
Not enough skiing options yet? Take the ski bus and visit the Schmittenhöhe in Zell am See. This resort offers about 77 km of slopes but be prepared that these are more for the advanced skiers and snowboarders. I would also recommend a visit of the town of Zell am See which offers some great views over the lake. But I have to admit that personally I like Kaprun more, I find it more real.
And what about if you are not so keen of hitting the slopes? Number one suggestion is trying out the Tauern Spa Kaprun. Pools with cold and hot water, attractions for children and adults, saunas and steam baths, massages and relax zones… There is everything to feel pampered under one roof. Or without a roof. Because even in this cold weather you can enjoy bathing outside in a pleasant temperature pool. Make it more special with some refreshing drinks being served to you without ever leaving the pool. You can just charge the drink (or any extra services) with the provided wrist band and pay when you leave. How great is that? Not even mentioning the glass skyline pool which is available for those who are willing to spend a bit extra for the accommodation and stay in the spa hotel.
I could totally keep going on and talk about this holiday and what to do, that’s how much I enjoyed it. But I don’t wanna be a total overkill, I get it.
But if you like, feel free to ask any questions, I’d be more than happy to (try to) answer them.
