You don’t have to be a master chef to join a cooking class in Thailand. You don’t need to have any kitchen skills really. The only thing you’ll need is a love for food.
If you walk through the streets of any Thai town or city and your sensations are dazed by the smells from the small street stalls, you are on a good way to enjoy a cooking class. If your mouth gets watery just thinking about the next exotic dish you are going to try on your travels, you should consider learning how to bring the little adventure home with you. If you wonder what are the names of all the beautiful fresh herbs and spices, you’d most likely enjoy yourself watching how to use them in the traditional cuisine. Only if you don’t like Thai food, I would recommend to skip this experience during your trip. Otherwise, you should definitely give it a try.
How to pick a class?
There are many options these days as enterprising Thais recognized the demand of their visitors very quickly. Because it’s a great way how to learn something new not only about the cuisine, but about the country itself. However not all the classes are the same. I would recommend a little research before booking the class. Not everyone offers a visit to the markets for example, so if that’s something you would like to see, make sure it’s in the booklet.
You should also consider how much time you’d like to spend learning the tricks behind all the delicious Thai meals and how many dishes you’d like to cook. Some classes take only few hours and therefore the skills and variety of meals you’ll learn are limited. But if cooking is not your biggest passion and you just want to try something new, it might be perfect for you. On the other hand some of the classes take half a day and you should be leaving not only with full belly but also full of information.
A good way to find out which class is worth it might be to ask the front desk at your accommodation. Of course you have to consider that they probably have a commission from the classes they recommend. But they should be also able to tell you how the certain class looks like and have feedback from other guests, which might help with your decisions.
Do I need to know how to cook?
As already said, you don’t need to know how to cook. Most of the classes are suitable even for the complete culinary beginners. The teacher will talk you through every step. Show you how to use all the different kitchen tools and ingredients. On the other hand if you consider yourself a master in cooking, I’m pretty sure you’ll still find the class very useful. There are lots of different recipes to learn as well as different techniques. Not to mention that every region has its own traditional dishes you most likely won’t find (and therefore learn) anywhere else.
Can I go to the class by myself?
Definitely. Of course it’s fun to go with a bunch of friends. That also means that you could probably taste various dishes. But don’t get discouraged if you are solo traveller or if your friends simply don’t want to join. Take that as your advantage. Being by yourself you won’t get so disrupted during the class. So you will most likely learn and then remember more than you would in a group. Not mentioning that cooking classes are certainly a great place to meet new people. If you prefer good food over partying then this is your place. You can easily start a conversation with someone new without being total weirdo. And if you like both party and good food? Then why not to learn how to cook yourself an ultimate hangover cure dish?
